Multivehicle accident on the N2: three dead, 13-month-old critical

Details surrounding the multivehicle accident are still vague, said Prinsloo. However, she said the Ermelo SAPS is investigating a complaint of culpable manslaughter.

A multivehicle accident occurred on the N2 near Acasia late on Sunday night, October 8.

Three vehicles were involved: a Volkswagen, a BMW and a Ford Focus.

The BMW had been transporting four people, three men and one woman.

According to Captain Carla Prinsloo, the spokesperson for the local police, it is still unclear who the driver of the BMW was.

One of the BMW patients only sustained injuries to his head.

Three people had been travelling in the Ford: a male driver, a female passenger and a 13-month-old baby.

The Volkswagen had been transporting three men. None of them were injured.

Two men were declared dead on scene. According to a paramedic on scene, five people, including baby Alexander Olivier, were transported to Ermelo Hospital with critical injuries.

Of this group, a woman succumbed to her injuries 20 minutes later.

There was speculation on social media that there had been a fourth car involved in the incident, that fled the scene.

However, Prinsloo confirmed this was not the case. “There were three vehicles involved in this accident. All of them were on scene.”

The legs and part of the Ford driver’s body of were stuck in between the dash and engine. Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue showcased excellent teamwork by working with ER24.

The former used the Jaws of Life to free the driver, while paramedics stabilised the driver and passengers.

Alexander broke both his ankles. It was later confirmed by his grandmother, Lizelle Olivier, that he has swelling on the brain and is under observation and receiving medication to stabilise it.
