Ermelo Super Spar denies racism claims amid strike action

The management of Spar denied the claims and told the newspaper they are in communications with the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union.

ERMELO – A group of protesters gathered at Ermelo Spar for the second consecutive day, to strike against alleged racism and unfair dismissals of workers.

According to one of the employees, a manager of the store recently went to all the bakery staff and apparently fired them for a hate speech post aimed at Spar, that was published on Facebook.

Spar’s management denies the claim and told the newspaper, the said manager indeed went to the bakery staff and sent them home for the day, but did not fire them.

The company is currently in communication with the workers’ union.

A letter from the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union to Super Spar Ermelo, indicate they intend to call off the industrial action taking place against the store and to distance themselves.

“We, however undertake and commit to have courteous engagement with you on January 16, 2023, in pursuit of an amicable solution to the myriad of challenges engulfing both the employer and the employees in the workplace.”
