Rhino horn smugglers nabbed on N2 near Piet Retief

The police had received a tip-off about a vehicle from KwaZulu-Natal being driven towards eMkhondo.

Three suspects were arrested on the N2 for the unlawful possession of rhino horns on August 21.

According to Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the provincial police spokesperson, the police had received a tip-off about a vehicle from KwaZulu-Natal being driven towards eMkhondo.

“Piet Retief Vispol members acted on the information and the vehicle with three occupants, two men, aged 26 and 39, as well as one woman, 25, were intercepted on the N2 at Idalia,” Mdhluli said.

The vehicle was thoroughly searched, and two rhino horns were discovered concealed in the engine bay.

The suspects could not provide any permits to possess these horns and were apprehended and charged with the unlawful possession of this endangered species’ body parts.

They appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court last week, although the outcome was not yet known by the time of going to press.
