TLU launches campaign to aid drought-stricken farmers

The impact of the drought extends beyond the agricultural sector.

In the face of a relentless drought that has gripped certain areas of the country, TLU SA (Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa) has launched a campaign urging fellow South Africans to rally behind the farmers who are grappling with severe challenges.

The current plight of farmers in regions like Koedoesrand, echoes the difficulties faced by farming communities in the past, notably in 2019 when the Ermelo Oos Boerevereniging initiated a project to aid Loxton farmers during a similarly devastating drought. Now, as then, the situation is dire.

Danie Prins, TLU SA’s north regional manager, said, “So far, we have not had a drop of rain in the Koedoesrand area. There is no grass in sight. For fifth-generation farmers like those in Koedoesrand, watching their livestock succumb to the brutal conditions is not only emotionally agonising, but also economically crippling.”

Farmers’ struggle

The continuous need to purchase feed to sustain their animals has led to an escalating burden of debt, forcing some farmers into the heart-wrenching decision of slaughtering emaciated animals to alleviate their suffering.

The impact of the drought extends beyond the agricultural sector, affecting farmworkers, families, and communities and posing a threat to the nation’s food security.

Farm importance

Bennie van Zyl, TLU SA’s general manager, emphasised the historical significance of family farms in contributing significantly to South Africa’s gross domestic product.

These commercial farms play a pivotal role in ensuring a stable food supply for the nation.

Trauma fund

In response to the crisis, TLU SA is urging all South Africans to support farmers by making financial contributions to the TLU SA Trauma Fund.

The Trauma Fund is designed to address various critical needs, including providing assistance to drought-affected commercial farmers, offering counselling services for victims of violence on farms, and delivering emergency relief in cases where the breadwinner has passed away or is hospitalised.

The Trauma Fund also supports socio-economic upliftment projects, community development initiatives, and training programmes for emerging farmers, contributing to the conservation and rehabilitation of natural resources.

To contribute to the relief efforts, residents are encouraged to visit the campaign website, TLU SA Drought Relief Campaign, at www.tlu.co.za.
