Wesselton Family grateful to be alive after shack fire

According to Mbatha the fire started after power was restored after load shedding.

WESSELTON – A family of ten is grateful to be alive after their home caught fire on the evening of July 12.

Nombali Mbatha (24) is the second-oldest of four siblings who reside with their six children in an RDP home in Kakati.

The siblings grandmother passed away in 2020, leaving them with little alternative but to manage the household.

The family received donations from disaster management and local stores. Photo: supplied

According to Mbatha, who was allegedly asleep with some of the children when the fire broke out, they heard a strange noise coming from the living room.

When they saw a fire had broken out, they rushed out to call the neighbours for assistance.

She added the fire started at the meter box.

“We were scared that we would be injured because there was a lot of smoke coming from the room. We are happy to be alive,” she said.

Since the fire allegedly started in the meter box, according to her, they suspect that load-shedding was to blame since the incident occurred after power had been restored.
