20-year-old man arrested for rape committed in 2021

According to Amersfoort police spokesman, Brig Selvy Mohlala, the suspects is charged with two separate counts of rape in which one was of a victim who is a minor aged 16 who was allegedly raped in the presence of her mother and brother in August 2021.

AMERSFOORT – A 20-year-old man was arrested on the afternoon of May 26 by members of the local police on allegations of two counts of rape committed in 2021.

According to the Amersfoort police spokesman, Brig Selvy Mohlala, the accused is charged with two charges of rape, one of which involves a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly raped in the presence of her mother and brother in August 2021.

“His arrest came as a result of a collaborative effort between the community and the police. The suspect is believed to have been on the run after allegedly rapping two of his victims in Amersfoort between July and August 2021. On May 25 he was spotted by the mother of one of the victims,” Brig Mohlala said.

He added that in July 2021 the accused, who was allegedly armed with a knife, held a 31-year-old woman hostage, robbed her of her belongings and raped her before he fled the scene.

“These cases were assigned to the police team from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Standerton to investigate. The team worked tirelessly and the suspects will possibly be linked to the rape cases. The police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against him as the investigation continues.”

The Mpumalanga provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, said t the public can play in the value chain of addressing gender-based-violence and femicide by ensuring that perpetrators are brought to book.
