Imbizo held in Wesselton to address escalating issue of gangsterism

According to Col Ngcobo, the age of the children who are involved in criminal activities in the area, are between 15 and 18.

WESSELTON – The Ermelo police station commander, Col Sdumo Ngcobo, invited residents to an imbizo on May 13 at By Grace Church.

The aim of the imbizo was to address the escalating issue of gangsterism in the area, especially in Thusi Village and Sun City.

Residents attended the imbizo, to raise their concerns on issues relating to crime in the area.

Various stakeholders took part in the meeting, including members of the community policing forum (CPF), the Christian Social Council, the Ermelo Taxi Association, the departments of social development, health, education, and local pastors.

Residents were provided with an opportunity to raise their concerns directly to the police and to provide possible solutions to crime-related issues.

According to Col Ngcobo, the age of the children who are involved in criminal activities in the area, are between 15 and 18.

11. Mr Joseph Njangase of the Ermelo Taxi Association encouraged parents who were part of the Imbizo to instil discipline on their children.

He also stated that seven people had died as a result of gang-related crimes, six of whom were stabbed and one of whom was shot.

“It’s unfortunate that even during recreational activities crime still occur here. One of the victims was fatally stabbed after playing in a soccer game, which is particularly disturbing since the suspects in these crimes are young children,” Col Ngcobo said.

He added that such meetings with the community are important so that locals may express their concerns and work with the police in finding a resolution.

“Another issue is that parents protect their children, particularly those who are involved in crime. This even spreads to schools, as gang members attack pupils on school premises. Some of the gang members are still learners. We can’t have students terrified to go to school because of gangs.”
