ERMELO – The Ermelo Police Sector Forum consists of four sectors aimed at halting criminal activities in the area.
WO Alfred Phillay is the overseer of Sector 3, which covers areas in town including East Ermelo, the CBD, Oos Street, Robertson Street, Oosthuise Street, Jan van Riebeek Street, Murray Street, Piet Street, Davel Street and Jacobs Street.
According to Phillay, housebreaking, business burglaries, stabbings, drugs and prostitution are the most common crimes in his sector.
WO Phillay expressed his frustration about the looming issue of drugs and prostitution in his sector.
“In drug-related cases, we usually arrest suspects, but we have a problem in that the court requires us to prove that the evidence we have in our possession really is drugs; this takes a lot of time, and by the time the results are back the suspects are already out on bail and running another drug operation again.”
