Classes suspended at GS College in Ermelo as students await allowances

According to Mr Nkosinathi Mabaso, regional secretary of Sasco, only an estimated 10% of GS College students, who are reliant on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, received their student allowances for the 2022 academic year.

Classes at GS College were suspended after a meeting was held by the South African Students Congress (Sasco) on April 12 to address outstanding student allowances.

According to Mr Nkosinathi Mabaso, regional secretary of Sasco, only an estimated 10% of GS College students, who are reliant on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, received their student allowances for the 2022 academic year.

Mr Mabaso also added the Students’ Representative Council has taken a request to GS College management to find out when the allocation of students’ allowances will take place and what the cause of the delay is, but no response was given.

“We have been waiting for a communique from the management but we have not received anything and are still being left in the dark.”

“Classes are suspended until further notice. Sasco is currently in a meeting with the financial aid management to discuss the issue of allowances,” Mr Mabasa concluded.
