Mkhondo police intervene prior to elections as residents protest over ward demarcation issues

Mkhondo – Community members protested during the early hours of the municipal elections on November 1.

According to Brig Selvy Mohlala, spokesman of Mpumalanga police, about 30 community members burned tyres due to ward demarcation issues.

“The protest delayed the opening of the voting station, because burning tyres first had to be extinguished and rubble cleared off the road,” Brig Mohlala said.

Lieut Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the provincial commissioner of the Mpumlanga police, visited the region, especially the hotspots to ensured all was well and also to provide the necessary support where it was needed.

Lieut Gen Manamela commended the police officers for their professional behaviour and working tirelessly within the ambits of the law to ensure that the voting process and proceedings were free of further disturbances.

“I must applaud the citizens of Mpumalanga as their conduct was also very professional.

“This shows that they respect the laws of this country and understand the importance of voting in a democratic country,” she concluded.
