Counterfeit banknotes in circulation in Ermelo

“Please ask cashiers to check and persons receiving change to do the same,” he said.

ERMELO – South African Community Crime Watch (SACCW) of Gert Sibande warned residents to be on the look out for fake money in Ermelo on October 19.

According to Mr Theo Craven, the control room operator for ACSU and district manager for the SACCW Gert Sibande Region, the fake currency of of R100 and R200 notes are doing the rounds.

“Please ask cashiers to check and persons receiving change to do the same,” he said.

He requested residents to be careful for person approaching you asking for change for any of these notes.

He gave some tips on how to spot fake money:

  • Security thread – is the shiny strip on the front of the banknote which becomes a continuous solid line when held in the light.
  • Watermark – is an embedded image of Nelson Mandela with the denomination.
  • Raised print
  • Visual aid feature
  • Colour changing ink
