Eskom to implement Stage 2 load shedding

Due to the increase in generation unit breakdowns, Eskom has announced that Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented starting at noon until 10pm.

UPDATE – Friday 10 July, 11.29am

Due to the increase in generation unit breakdowns, Eskom has announced that Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented starting at noon until 10pm.

According to Eskom, loadshedding has been caused by an increase in plant breakdowns exceeding 3 000MW of capacity.

Eskom said it’s working hard to return as many of these generation units to service.

While five generation units were taken off the grid last night and this morning, a breakdown at the Matimba power station has today resulted in the need for loadshedding.

Two units at the Arnot power station, as well as a unit each at Kendal, Tutuka and Majuba were taken off the grid last night and this morning.

These removed more than 3 000MW of capacity from the system.

The delayed return to service of a generation unit at the Duvha power station has also added significant pressure to the generation system.

“We urge the public to continue reducing electricity usage to help us minimise loadshedding.”

Eskom has stated that five of its generating units have been taken of the grid which means that the power system is severely constrained and the risk of load shedding is much higher.

Eskom has urged the public to continue reducing electricity usage to help avoid loadshedding.

Should the need arise, loadshedding could be implemented in order to protect the integrity of the system.

If this is the case, there is a risk of load shedding between 4pm-10pm.

Two units at the Arnot power station, as well as a unit each at Kendal, Tutuka and Majuba were taken off the grid.

These removed more than 2 600MW of capacity from the system.

The delayed return to service of a generation unit at the Duvha power station, has also added significant pressure to the generation system.

Eskom said in a press statement yesterday that this constrained supply situation may persist throughout the weekend.

“Over the past two evenings the help of the public assisted us in avoiding the need for load shedding.

“With your help Eskom can again pull through without loadshedding.”
