Gert Sibande District Municipal employees obtain Remote Pilot Licenses

Some of the functions that may be performed with Drone Aircrafts in municipal space include contour mapping, infrastructure assessment and bridges assessment.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) on 26 March, celebrated two of its employees Mr Tebogo Tsotetsi and Mr Sifiso Simelane who recently obtained their Remote Pilot Licences (RPL) which allows them to fly drones in South Africa.

Ms Bongi Ka Dube, the spokesman of Gert Sibande District Municipality, said: “As a community-driven district, we are proud to bring some of the cutting edge technology that will also assist and benefit our local municipalities.”

Some of the functions that may be performed with Drone Aircrafts in municipal space include contour mapping, infrastructure assessment and bridges assessment.

Other areas in which drones can be used are gas detection and with firefighting, especially during fire seasons (observational implementation).

Executive Mayor Councillor Muzi Chirwa and the municipal leadership congratulated the duo and applauded the management, mainly the Planning and Economic Development Department in GSDM for the initiative which shows that the District is improving on technological development and on supporting local municipalities.
