Ex-offender from Ermelo opens up about reintegration into society

He was sentenced in 1995 to nine year's imprisonment at Bethal correctional services for armed robbery in Davel.

For most ex-offenders reintegration into society after their release from prison is not an easy task.

Mr Sibusiso Sithole, an ex-offender in Ermelo, recently shared his story of life after prison and how he began an organisation to help ex-offender with their reinsertion into their respective communities after being released.

He explained that from of his own experience in and out of prison, he learned that the hardships ex-offenders face after being released from prison, is mostly the reason why they are likely to return.

“It is like an evil circle and we as a community need to help them to adapt and secure a better life.”

According to Mr Sithole most ex-offenders experience a lack of confidence and feel that their communities have abandoned them.

He was first convicted at the age of 15 years and served several sentences in his life.

He was sentenced in 1995 to nine years’ imprisonment at Bethal Correctional Services for armed robbery in Davel.

In prison he was part of the 26-gang and for him to maintain his position as a leader in the gang, he had to stab several people.
