UPDATE – Principal of New Ermelo Primary School holds meeting with parents after outbreak at school

Mr Sam Dludlu, principal of New Ermelo Primary School, held a parents meeting to inform parents of learners about the report from the hospital and the response from the Department of Health.

311 learners of New Ermelo Primary School were rushed to Ermelo Provincial Hospital with symptoms of itchy skin on 16 August.

Ms Marietjie Hattingh, Clinical program coordinator for infection, prevention and control from Ermelo Regional Hospital said, she is still waiting for the results from national institute for communicable diseases (NICD) in Johannesburg with regards to the food samples collected by the Department of Health.

Ms Hattingh added, “We doubt it is food borne related, at this stage we suspect challenges related to dust.”

Mr Dludlu educated learners of hand hygiene and personal hygiene before and after they eat.
