Davel residents fed up after refuse not collected in three months

According to the community, waste bins are full, dumping sites are pilling-up on a daily basis and a stench surrounds the place, which has led to flies making a home in the township.

The residents of KwaDela in Davel went on a rampage as they dumped waste at a councillor’s house and the Msukaligwa Municipality’s office on Friday, 22 March.

Allegedly refuse has not been collected in Davel since the year began.

According to the community, waste bins are full, dumping sites are pilling-up on a daily basis and a stench surrounds the place, which has led to flies making a home in the township.

The dumping of waste at the councillor’s house and offices was done in the early hours of the morning which also led to the closure of municipal offices for the whole day.

Community members argued that they have to pay not less than R126.50 on a monthly basis, just for refuse removal which is not done.

The community is convinced that after this action they will be listened to and their concerns would be taken into consideration.

The Highvelder inquired at the municipality as to why refuse has allegedly not been removed.

“This as a result of the shortage of staff,” the municipality supervisor in Davel, Mr Nhlanhla Manana said.

Mr Manana further added the Expanded Public Work Program (EPWP) contract came to an end in December, which was a terrible blow to the municipality as only three workers were left, and they could not collect waste for the past three months.

Going forward, the community is expecting the municipal manager or the mayor of Msukaligwa Municipality to come to Davel and address the number of grievances the community has.

The community vowed that the municipal offices will remain shut until their concerns are heard.
