Township Youth Transformation (TYT) hosted two events in the past week, in their quest to uplift learners in township schools.

The non-profit organisation hosted a spelling bee competition for Grade 12 learners at the Ermelo Civic Center on Wednesday, 13 March, with the aim to enhance the vocabulary of the learners taking part, arm them with public speaking skills, and have fun at the same time by competing with their peers.

A total of 12 learners took part from four primary schools, namely Qambekile Primary (Wesselton), Breyten Primary, KwaChibikhulu Primary (Chrissiesmeer) and Lungelo Primary (De Vereeniging Farm).

Two learners from Breyten Primary School were crowned as the winners.

Mthokozisi Maseko walked away in first position for the boys, spelling most of his words correctly to the judging panel while Victoria Hadebe took the number one spot in the girls category.

TYT also hosted the Regional Zion Schools Choir competition in the Wesselton Community Hall on Saturday, 16 March.

More than 15 schools from all over the Gert Sibande District converged at the hall to compete to be crowned the Best Zion School Choir.

Lilanga Secondary School from Diepdale in Fernie, mesmerised the judges and walked away as champions of the competition as they took the crown from the defending champions, Zinikeleni Secondary School from Carolina.

Ithafa Secondary School made the locals proud as runners up and last year’s champions, Zinikeleni Secondary, had to settle for third place.
