Two men appear in court after they kill store owner in armed robbery in Mayflower

Three men entered a foreign national owned shop in Mayflower on Wednesday, 6 March and robbed the 42-year old owner of an undisclosed amount of cash, before firing shots at the man and fleeing the scene, leaving him lying in a pool of blood.

Two suspects, aged between 24 and 26 years old, appeared in the Mayflower Periodical Court on Wednesday, 13 March, on charges of murder and business robbery.

According to reports at police’s disposal, three men entered a foreign national owned shop on Wednesday, 6 March and robbed the 42-year-old owner of an undisclosed amount of cash, before firing shots at the man and fleeing the scene, leaving him lying in a pool of blood.

An investigation was then launched which led the police to a certain place where one suspect was arrested on Monday, 11 March.

Police continued with their investigation after receiving information which led them to the other two suspects.

When police arrived, the suspects tried to flee and fired shots at the police, which resulted in one of their members being grazed by a bullet.

Police retaliated by firing back and one of the suspects was hit and later certified dead at the scene.

The other suspect was arrested, hence their appearance in court.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, condemned the act of criminals attacking the police and in the same breath, urged members to be alert at all times as well and always expect the worst while attending to complaints.
