Gert Sibande District Municipality awards new bursaries and recognises current holders

The bursary scheme ensures that at least one learner from each of the seven local municipalities within the district, receives educational support through a bursary.

Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) recently invited its current bursary holders and the new intake of beneficiaries together with their relatives to its office, to recognise outstanding results from its current beneficiaries and also to hand over new bursaries.

The Executive Mayor, Mr Muzi Chirwa, has been an ambassador for education, and in his remarks when engaging with the communities during the different forms of public participation, he has never missed an opportunity to encourage young people to pursue education.

Ms Lindi Masina, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa and Mr Trevor Nkosi (far right) celebrate with Ms Lethabo Nkosi and her mother. Ms Nkosi is a current beneficiary and was being recognised for her outstanding results after she achieved nine distinctions in the 2018 academic year for her BCom Degree in Financial Sciences.

This event has become a feature in the calendar of GSDM.

During the State of the District Address in the 2017/2018 financial year, Mr Chirwa announced an improved and a more inclusive Bursary Scheme.

The scheme was to make sure that at least one learner from each of the seven local municipalities within the district, are going to receive educational support through a bursary.

This was evident when the new intake of beneficiaries were from all municipalities in various fields of study.

The district has introduced a couple of initiatives, to improve the bursary scheme, including playing an involved oversight role to the bursary holders during the year to provide a platform which makes it easier for the students to communicate with GSDM regarding their bursaries.

Mr Kennedy Lindokuhle Phakathi receives a bursary from Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa (GSDM) to study a Bachelor of Engineering Technology at Tshwane University of Technology. Next to him is his mother, Mr Trevor Nkosi (GSDM: Whip of Council), Mr. Thulasizwe Thomo (Msukaligwa Municipality), Mr Absenia Habile (GSDM: Municipal Manager) and Mr Joshua Nkosi (GSDM: Speaker).
