The Mpumalanga Department of Health (DoH) held a day of prayer at the Ella De Bruin Hall on Friday, 1 February to remember colleagues who passed away in the last year.
The Health-care Workers Wellness Day was also celebrated during the event with the MEC of DoH in the province, Ms Sasekhani Manzini, in attendance.
The prayer day provided an opportunity for a debriefing of the past year and to boost the morale of the staff.
According to Gert Sibande District DoH spokesman, Mr Sibusiso Mabuza, the idea emanated after the DoH encountered more deaths in 2018.
Health-workers converged at the Civic Centre and were welcomed by the Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM), Mr Muzi Chirwa.
The Amajuba Hospital Choir from Volksrust provided the entertainment with hymns and various worker’s unions gave their messages of support.
The MEC gave the keynote address and put emphasis in that the day was to show a level of understanding and to also intervene on the trauma nurses and other employees have experienced in the past two years.
A candle ceremony took place where candles were lit to remember all those who have passed on.
The prayer and wellness day was a first of its kind and the department seeks to make the day an annual event.
