Highs and lows for Class of 2018

The Gert Sibande District achieved an overall pass rate of 77,5 per cent.

The Class of 2018 had mixed reactions as they collected their grade 12 results on Friday, 4 January.

Ligbron Academy of Technology’s matric class of 2018 attained a 100 per cent pass rate.

Nabiha Seedat and Mandisa Motha are the top achievers at Ligbron with seven distinctions each.

Edward Jacobs, Sthembile Maseko and Palesa Mtsali received six distinctions and six learners obtained five distinctions.

Hoërskool Ermelo achieved an overall pass rate of 99 per cent.

From the group of 101 matriculants, a total of 99 A-symbols and a remarkable 146 B-symbols were obtained. Lusanti Brundyn and Lydia Landman are the top achievers at EHS with five distinctions. Lusanti got distinctions for Music, Life Orientation, English and Life Science. Lydia has distinctions in History, Life Orientation, Accounting, Matchematics and Afrikaans.

Jenna Lewis, Charl Rautenbach and Vandré Swart received four distinctions.

Mabuza of Netherland Park Secondary School (NPSS) lived up to expectations, achieving a 76 per cent average and one distinction in Business Studies.

Her fellow school learners also achieved commendable results as Sphiwo Msibi got 75 per cent and two distinctions in Mathematics and Physical Science.

Zikhona Sibanyoni, the class of 2018 head girl, achieved an average of 73 per cent, scoring two distinctions in Afrikaans and Maths Literacy and Sicelo Madlopha and Sandile Mkhatshwa both got 71 per cent averages.

NPSS got an overall pass rate of 90,3 per cent.

Ithafa Secondary School in Wesselton was also in the 90 per cent bracket average, attaining a 90,1 per cent pass rate.

Their top learner is Noluthando Nkwanyana, who got four distinctions and an average of 82 per cent. Noluthando aspires to be a general practitioner.

Ermelo Combined learners did their parents proud with the school attaining a 96 per cent average and Reggie Masuku Secondary School got 84 per cent average.

KwaDela Secondary School in Davel did pretty well, getting an 88 per cent pass rate, a 23 per cent improvement from the 65 per cent the school attained in 2017.

The most outstanding learner is Nompumelelo Makhanye, who got distinctions in both Mathematics and Physical Science.

Masizakhe Secondary School in Breyten also fared well, obtaining 78 per cent overall average with their best learner, Mthokozisi Ndumo, earning himself four distinctions in English, Geography, Life Sciences and IsiZulu.

Cebisa and Lindile Secondary Schools were on the other end of the spectrum with the schools not performing at their best and getting 32,8 and 31,2 per cent respectively.

Siyabonga Mlangeni is Cebisa Secondary’s top performing learner after he got two distinctions in Geography and Maths Literacy.

Only 22 out of the 66 learners at Cebisa managed to pass grade 12.

Lindile Secondary has had a tumultuous year and it shows with the pass rate.

The school had to be shut down indefinitely after teachers stopped presenting classes fearing for their health and safety with the deteriorating school buildings. The school was reopened after the provincial Department of Education released funds for the renovation of the school.

The Gert Sibande District achieved an overall pass rate of 77,5 per cent and learners and teachers alike look forward to surpassing it with the class of 2019.
