SASSA and DSD offices close as Nehawu members down tools in nationwide strike

The union demands the biometric enrolment of beneficiaries be suspended‚ consultation on the biometric enrolment be prioritised and a job evaluation be undertaken in grants administration.

Members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) picketed outside the Msukaligwa South Africa Social Services Agency (SASSA) offices on Wednesday, 10 October as part of the nationwide strike.

Nehawu was joined by the South African Communist Party (SACP) as they picketed on Wednesday and Thursday leading to the SASSA and Department of Social Development (DSD) offices being closed down from Wednesday to Friday.

“The national strike will run indefinitely until all our demands are met by SASSA management‚” National General Secretary of Nehawu, Mr Zola Saphetha, said before the strike commenced.

SASSA and DSD offices reopened on Monday, 15 October with services offered.
