Fugitive who escaped from custody, caught by off-duty police officer

The fugitive escaped while he was being transferred back to the holding cells after he had attended a court appearance for a charge of business burglary.

A man who escaped custody at the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 May, was re-arrested.

Thokozani Malinga was brought to book by an off-duty cop.

The 23-year-old Malinga was nabbed on Thursday morning, 31 May, at around 9am by a constable who spotted and cornered him while leaving his hideout.

The suspect escaped the previous day at about 4pm, after he was remanded in custody.

According to reports, he fled from the court room while being escorted back to the holding cells.

Malinga was initially arrested for a business burglary which he committed in March around Ermelo.

He is now facing an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, applauded the police constable for going beyond the call of duty and bringing this fugitive to book.

“This shows a passion and dedication towards his work and all police officers must take a queue from his actions,” Lt-Gen Zuma concluded.
