A march organised by the South African Communist League (SACP) turned violent last Friday, 2 February at the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) offices.
More than 5 000 people comprising of various organisations and community groups marched to hand over a memorandum to Mpumalanga Premier, Mr David Mabuza.

This did not sit well with the protesters who did not want to engage in talks with the GSDM leadership, which included Executive Mayor, Mr Muzi Chirwa, Municipal Manager, Mr Absenia Habile and the Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa Municipality, Mr Buti Joseph Mkhaliphi.
An ANC youth league faction singing struggle songs added to the tense moment, prompting the protesters to aggressively chase them out.
This is the second SACP-led march after one on 12 January where they demanded that Msukaligwa Chief Whip, Ms Phumzile Mashiane, be removed.
The SACP gave the municipality 14 working days to respond.
According to Mr Mzwandile Zulu, SACP Secretary in Msukaligwa, the response was not satisfactory and Ms Mashiane is still in office.
