Thuthuzela Care Centre hosts Christmas party for victims

Thuthuzela Care Centre hosted a Christmas party for the 2017 victims of gender-based violence at the Ermelo Provincial Hospital.

Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) in Ermelo held a Christmas party for the 2017 victims of gender-based violence at the Ermelo Provincial Hospital.

TCC Ermelo is one of 55 national and five provincial centres for victims of sexual abuse.

The event saw victims receiving presents and food parcels to enjoy during the festive season.

The purpose was to commemorate the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children and to give victims something to smile about.

Most of the victims at the centre come from poor households and most perpetrators take advantage of their situation and molest them with a promise of food.

Unemployment plays a big role in the escalating number of sexual and gender-based violence in that some people will be violated and refrain from reporting to police due to the fact that their perpetrators are the sole providers.

The 16 days of activism began on 25 November and ended on 10 December.

This year’s theme was: “Count me in: together moving a non-violent South Africa”.
