Bothingo maidens leaders host royal amaHlubis

The women imparted knowledge and shared challenges they face as leaders of the maidens.

Women leaders of Bothingo from across Mpumalanga met at the Civic Centre last Thursday to discuss and put forward solutions to challenges they face on a monthly basis and review their progress this year.

The women are in charge of maidens who undergo virginity testing and participate in the annual Reed Dance (Umhlanga) in Swaziland.

They hosted representatives from the Royal Hlubi Kingdom with Ms M. Shoba, standing in for the Queen Mother of the amaHlubi nation.

Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, Mr M.S. Nkosi, welcomed the delegation, while leader Ms Sonto Mlambo delivered the keynote address.

The women imparted knowledge and shared challenges they face as leaders of the maidens.

They reviewed their trip to Swaziland’s royal residence to participate in the annual traditional chastity rite, the Reed Dance ceremony.

Ms Shoba will take the information back to the Queen Mother who will review the talks and give feedback accordingly.
