Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa, Mr M.S Nkosi has stepped down from his position

Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa, Mr M.S Nkosi has stepped down from his position.

In a surprise move, the Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa, Mr M.S Nkosi has stepped down from his position.

According to municipal spokesman, Mr Mandla Zwane, Mr Nkosi resigned last Wednesday with immediate effect.

No reason has been given as to why he has stepped down with the municipality holding a special council meeting on the day of going to print.

Mr Zwane confirmed the meeting was to take place in order for council members to elect a new executive mayor.

The mayor’s decision comes after a previous council meeting saw the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) put forward a motion for his removal saying the mayor was failing to carry out his responsibilities.

According to documents received at the opposition party’s press briefing, the mayor failed to implement or monitor the implementation of the municipality’s 2016/2017 financial year budget which resulted in R22 million cut in the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).

EFF also alleges that the mayor allowed a  number of illegal contracts to be awarded in the disguise of turn-key projects and did nothing after being notified of their illegality. The fencing of the Civic Centre was one example.

The opposition party also laments the fact that the mayor failed to drive the process for the recruitment, selection and  appointment of the municipality’s accounting officer (municipal manager).

Mr Nkosi was sworn in in August last year, his reign has seen many service delivery protests with residents bemoaning the deterioration of the town.

His successor is said to be Mr B.J Mkhaliphi of the ANC.
