Three accused of murdering 38-year-old denied bail

Tshifhango had been strangled and his body hung in a tree when he was discovered last year on the farm Spitzkop.

National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) members chanted union songs and celebrated at the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court as three suspects accused of murdering 38-year-old Rofhiwa Tshifhango last year remain behind bars, as they were refused bail last Wednesday.

Tshifhango had been strangled and his body hung in a tree when he was discovered on 29 November last year on the farm Spitzkop, while his badly beaten friend’s body was lying next to the road nearby.

Both victims were employed by the Department of Public Works in Ermelo.

Initial investigations suggested that the victims had been abducted from Tshifhango’s house in Davel Street in Ermelo the previous evening.

Two armed men had apparently entered the house, held the victims at gunpoint, assaulted them and ransacked the house before loading them into the back of the Tshifhango’s vehicle.

The vehicle was found deserted on a farm road between Ermelo and Hendrina.
The suspects face charges of murder, conspiracy, attempted murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.
