GS TVET College holds its SRC Lekgotla

Policies included the Strike and Intervention Policy, Disciplinary Committee, Student Academic Policy, Social Committee and SRC benefits.

Gert Sibande TVET College Student Representative Council (SRC) met to review and update their constitution and policies in a three-day Lekgotla at the Ermelo Inn recently.

According to the Job Placement Manager, Mr Sihle Nzuza, the Lekgotla was an initiative to build organic and intellectual leadership structures in advancement of student revolution, provide leadership training to the SRC to capacitate them to contribute effectively and play meaningful roles in the college and their communities.

The event took place over three days with day one blessed with the presence of Acting Regional Manager for TVET Colleges in Mpumalanga and North West, Mr Nick Balkrishen, acting CEO and principal of Gert Sibande TVET College, Ms Portia Randingwane, and Student Support Services Manager, Ms Regina Mampye.

According to Mr Balkrishen, the college is successful because of the dedicated staff members that ensure that the college remains the top performing institution in South Africa.

“The SRC of Gert Sibande TVET College remain one of the key strengths in the success of the College,” he said.

He urged the SRC leadership to continue to support Ms Radingwane, who delivered a message of support on the day where she acknowledged the SRC, the Student Support Officers and the Student Liaison Officers for their hard work and commitment.

She took the opportunity to introduce MsMampye, who also shared a message of support, stating that “as leaders, you should have a vision as much as the college has the vision to be the leading college brand in South Africa”.

Day two of the programme continued with the review of the constitution where all six campuses made inputs to amend the constitution.

The student SRC broke into five commissions to review the policies and discuss issues that affect the student community.

Policies included the Strike and Intervention Policy, Disciplinary Committee, Student Academic Policy, Social Committee and SRC benefits.

Day three began with Financial Aid Officer, Mr Andile Msibi, giving a brief presentation about ethical leadership, student code of conduct and discipline within the SRC.

SRC Exco secretary, Genius Shabalala, presented amendments of the constitution, policy document and all the recommendations made by the SRC leadership.

The leadership voted on and accepted the amendments to the constitution.
