Chief Whip lends a helping hand in Chrissiesmeer

Thembinkosi was identified during Mandela Month with the help of Ward 19 councillor Mr Madonsela, who explained the conditions and circumstances Thembinkosi was living under.

A youth-headed household in KwaChibikhulu, Chrissiesmeer received a donation of furniture from the Gert Sibande District Municipal Whip of Council, Mr Trevor Nkosi, last Friday.

Thembinkosi Dlamini (20) lost both his parents in 2009 and has since been living alone in his uncle’s RDP house.
Since then, life has been difficult for the Grade 11 learner as he has been dependent on his unemployed aunt, handouts from the neighbours and the ward councillor, Mr Msizi Madonsela.

For him to survive, he has held odd jobs. Relaying his story of survival, he explained that some days were better than others.

Thembinkosi was identified by the Office of the Chief Whip during Mandela Month with the help of Ward 19 councillor Mr Madonsela, who explained the conditions and circumstances Thembinkosi was living under.

After several assessments, Mr Nkosi and his office began the procurement processes to assist the young man.

With the help of members of the Community Work Programme (CWP), the house was cleaned and painted before the furniture was moved in.

Accompanied by members of the Mayoral Committee, Ms D. Nhlengethwa, Ms L. Masina and Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality, Mr M. Chirwa, they handed over furniture to Thembinkosi, which included a television set, refrigerator, microwave-oven, blankets, a double bed set, curtains and a supply of groceries, among others.

Mr Nkosi said the donation was one way to revive Thembinkosi’s dignity and to lift the burden off his shoulders.
Some of Mr Nkosi’s community projects for the month include donating sanitary towels, three computers, soccer and basketball kits to various secondary schools around Gert Sibande District.
