TYT hosts winter classes for Grade 12s

The aim of the programme is to motivate the learners to pursue further education and training by obtaining higher marks so they have more options of careers at higher learning institutions.

Township Youth Transformation (TYT) together with a team of university students hosted winter classes during the school holidays to assist Grade 12 learners in township schools.

This is part of their winter programme where they source schools in need of assistance and intervention, given the matric results of last year.

The organisation brought in an academic team of local students studying at higher learning institutions who volunteered their winter break by teaching and mentoring Grade 12s in the schools.

The students from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) are studying various courses, ranging from education to astrophysics.

They began their first week at the Camden Combined School, ending their programme at Cebisa Secondary School in Wesselton.

They assisted learners in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects, which are problematic.

“We saw the need to assist these learners and what better way to do this than to introduce their peers who recently had success in STEM subjects and are thriving at university level,” said TYT chairman, Ayanda Nkosi.

The aim of the programme is to motivate the learners to pursue further education and training by obtaining higher marks so they have more options of careers at higher learning institutions.

TYT’s next project will be a Business Guru Youth Entrepreneurship Week.

There they will be empowering township youth to pursue business at an early age.

In September the NPO will host a gala fundraising dinner for underprivileged learners who have passed their Grade 12 with flying colours, accepted at higher learning institutions, but lack the money for registration and fees.
