Accident claims three lives

Passengers travelling on the back of the bakkie were flung off and lay several metres apart.

Two adults and a teenager died and four others, including two minor children, suffered injuries ranging from critical to serious in a horror accident at about 05:45 on the N2 between Ermelo and Piet Retief on Saturday morning. The two minor children were among the critically injured.

According to police and emergency workers on the scene, it is believed the driver of a bakkie lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road and overturned several times before coming to rest in a field.

Passengers traveling on the back of the bakkie were flung off and lay several metres apart.

The injured patients were assessed and treated on the scene by emergency personnel from Mpumalanga Emergency services and ER24 before being transported to the Ermelo Provincial Hospital for further treatment.

The condition of the injured patients is unknown at this stage.
