This is part of an annual initiative initiated by the centre to help vulnerable children of the after-care programme.
Phumelelo After Care Centre offers the programme with the aim of taking care of vulnerable, less fortunate and disabled children, providing them with food and assisting them with their home work after school before going home.
Run by selfless women, it is a safe haven for the children compared to life on the street and at home living in abject poverty.
“As May is Children’s Month, we come here every year to lend a hand by donating school shoes and clothes and spending time with children who cannot afford much,” said Correctional Services social worker Ms J. du Plessis.
Phumelelo After Care Centre manager, Ms N. Mbatha, thanked Correctional Services and wished more people were as charitable, as these donations are essential to the children as they go a long way in alleviating their grim living conditions.
