Car guard grannies rule

Gog'Zodwa Ndlovu (60) and Paulina Vilakazi (63) are two familiar faces on the street, carrying whips and wearing reflector vests.

Two grannies rule De Clercq Street in Ermelo, lending a helping hand with the parking and guarding of cars.

Gog’Zodwa Ndlovu (60) and Paulina Vilakazi (63) are two familiar faces on the street, carrying whips and wearing reflector vests.

Gog’Zodwa has been there for more than 13 years, beginning in 2003 while Gog’Paulina started in 2014.

Lack of jobs and income has resulted in these two working through the cold winters and the blazing summers, from the early hours of the morning till the late afternoons, just to put food on the table.

The most they make in a day is a measly R100, but they endure, saying it is better than nothing.

While Gog’Paulina is a social grant beneficiary for older persons, Gog’Zodwa is still waiting till she turns a full 60 years before she applies to receive hers. However, she states that she will carry on working, as the grant is not enough.
