The (w)hole story

"I don't understand why they cannot finish the job and close it up.

Unfinished work by Msukaligwa municipal employees has left a local businessman, Mr Essop Jassat, at his wits’ end.

“Six weeks ago they dug a huge hole right in front of the entrance to my shop to repair a water leak.
With that I had no problem, because it was necessary.
But they never bothered to close it up and repeated requests to do so have fallen on deaf ears,” said an irate Mr Jassat.

According to Mr Jassat, he is losing business because potential customers cannot get parking in front of the premises and have to walk around the perimeter of the hole to enter the shop.

He said a pedestrian was injured recently after he had fallen into the hole in the dark and had to receive treatment at a local hospital.

The hole is now filling up with litter and is an eyesore.

“I don’t understand why they cannot finish the job and close it up.

Surely they can see that this is an inconvenience to my business and a danger to the public.
Why do they leave all the holes they dig open?” asked Mr Jassat.
