Road fatalities pose more danger

Road crashes occur from Friday to Sunday between 22:00 and 04:00.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Pat Ngomane says road fatalities in South Africa pose a serious threat to life than HIV/AIDS if nothing urgent and dramatic is done.

According to Ngomane, road accidents are robbing the country of skilled, young people and some of them even breadwinners at their homes.

He said this while addressing members of the Interprovincial Technical Task Team (IPTTT) consisting of six provinces, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Guteng attending a two days meeting in Mbombela to work on joint strategies to fight road accidents and the general safety of communities.

Ngomane also noted that a significant number of road crashes occur from Friday to Sunday between 22:00 and 04:00.

He also urged provinces to seriously look at the issue of providing a 24-hour road law enforcement service on the country’s roads.
