Heavy sentences for farm attackers

The sentencing came after an incident on 27 February this year in which an elderly couple, Mr Herman Enslin and his wife, Ona were held at gunpoint, manhandled, tied up and robbed on their farm near Chrissiesmeer.

The Ermelo Regional Court on 24 October sentenced two men to a total of 21 years’ imprisonment each after they were found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession ammunition and kidnapping.

The sentencing came after an incident on 27 February this year in which an elderly couple, Mr Herman Enslin and his wife, Ona, were held at gunpoint, manhandled, tied up and robbed on their farm near Chrissiesmeer.

Thulani Masuku (23) and David Mduduzi Malaza (31) were each sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment on the first count of armed robbery and six years on the count of illegal possession of a firearm.

A further two years on count three (illegal possession of ammunition) and five years on count four (kidnapping) will run concurrently.

Second suspect arrested

In another crime-related incident, police have reported that a second suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft of 14 sheep that were found in a hearse that had overturned on the road between Ermelo and Morgenzon in the early hours of Friday 28 October. The suspect was traced to the Elsie Ballot Hospital in Amersfoort and arrested.
