Dangerous criminal escapes after killing police captain.

Shongwane is armed and considered highly dangerous.

Police have launched an intensive manhunt for a dangerous awaiting trial prisoner who shot and killed a police captain before escaping from the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning 09:00. Joshua Bomba Shongwane (30) was due to appear in court for criminal proceedings on several counts of highjacking.

Police are appealing to anyone who may know of Shongwane’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stop at 086 001 0111 or the nearest police station.

He is armed and considered to be highly dangerous. Shongwane was at the court cells when he held up three police officers with a firearm. He then took the cell keys and locked them in an office inside the court. He allegedly ran down the stairs where he shot and killed the police captain before escaping.

Shongwe was an awaiting trial prisoner for nine counts of highjacking committed in Thembisa, Rabie Ridge, and Kagiso in 2012. He also escaped from the court cells in 2015 but was later re-arrested.

A reward for information leading to the arrest of Shongwane will be issued.
