Women farmers are encouraged to advance

The purpose of the event was to inspire change by engaging women on issues affecting them and their role in agriculture.

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) recently convened a meeting in Bankfontein, Breyten aimed at assisting emerging women in agriculture around Gert Sibande District Municipality.

The purpose of the event was to inspire change by engaging women on issues affecting them and their role in agriculture.

Piet Retief project coordinator Ms Lizeka said women advancement should be encouraged and for women to work together, especially in farming. Also present at the event was Mr Dudukani Magongoa from Buhle Academy.

Buhle is a non-profit organisation that trains and mentors upcoming and previously disadvantaged farmers and is accredited by Agriseta.

Mr Magongoa encouraged young and older women to use their skills and services to provide sustainable development.

Ms Gugu Ndlelea from AgriSeta spoke about on agricultural skills development. She also encouraged women to move from emerging farmer level to commercial farming, and reminded them that AgriSeta is also offering training and leadership programmers towards their advancement.

The department also honoured Ms Granny Sikhosana (73) for motivating young women not to give up no matter the circumstances.

At the event, a committee that would look into establishing a cooperate was established.
