Prison sentence should deter thieves

"There's a perception that nobody can be arrested for stealing electricity"

Malamulele Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo handed a six months prison sentence to a Mozambican national after he was found guilty on two charges.

He was found guilty on charges of illegal connections and electricity theft, his sentence was without a fine option.

Head of Operation Khanyisa at Eskom Dileep John said electricity theft is a criminal offence.

“There’s a perception that nobody can be arrested for stealing electricity, this case shows that if you steal electricity, you will get caught and could face jail sentence,”said Deleep.

According to Deleep, more than 50 people have been arrested in recent times as a result of Operation Khanyisa while 26 cases have been opened on the court roll.
