Gert Sibande TVET College Ermelo Campus hosted a wellness day where students also celebrated spring with a lot of activities for the day last Friday.

Health and Wellness Coordinator Sizakele Shabalala said this was the final HIV Voluntary Testing and Counseling for the year.

“The campaign was conducted parallel to the Spring Day celebration and since the beginning of the year more than 330 students tested for HIV and are currently receiving on-going support from the local clinics,”said Sizakele in a statement.

She also said the purpose of the campaign was to encourage students to know their HIV status so that they can live responsibly.

The student support Services offer guidance and counseling to students on on-going basis.

Some of the activities on the day included voluntary HIV testing and counseling, Blood Pressure and TB screening,

Male medical circumcision, blood donations and condom demonstrations.

Noxolo Lusenga tested for HIV and said this was her fourth time testing since last year because she wants to know her status and be able to get help on time should she at one stage test positive and be able to protect her partner.

She also encouraged her peers and others to be selfish with their health and not live it in the hands of others.

Zinhle Nkosi donated blood and said with her blood she wants to be able to save a life.

Wellness coordinator Sizakele said the campaign was a success and thanked all stakeholders involved and said without them the college would not be able to pull this.

On the day 163 students screened for TB, 47 did the blood pressure test and 72 did the voluntary HIV testing and counseling.
