Suspect found hanged in police cell

At about 00:45 on Tuesday it was found he had hanged himself with a blanket in his cell.

A suspect who was re-arrested on Monday night after escaping from the Ermelo police cells over the weekend was found hanged in his cell early on Tuesday morning.

Police spokesman for Ermelo, Capt Carla Prinsloo, said the deceased, Siyabonga Welcome Zwane (21), who was originally being held on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and a 21-year-old housebreaking suspect who at this stage cannot be named, escaped through the roof of their police cell over the weekend.

Zwane was re-arrested at about 20:30 on Monday night and again held in custody. At about 00:45 on Tuesday it was found he had hanged himself with a blanket in his cell.

The other escapee was still at large by the time of going to print.
