Baby Aviwe was buried last Friday in a funeral attended by the police, the community and community leaders.

Chrissiesmeer Police recently extended a helping hand to a destitute Zimbabwean family at Isidingo Section in Chrissiesmeer when they dug into their pockets to arrange a funeral for a member of the family.

This came after the station management tasked the crime prevention team to go to the community and identify socio-economic challenges that may have direct or indirect impacts on crime in the area.

While consulting various stakeholders and Childline field officers, the police were referred to a family living in a shack described as unfit for human habitation. The family survived on selling alcohol.

Chrissiesmeer police spokesman Const N.P. Xaba, said at the shack they also found an ill, disabled child that needed immediate attention. The team set out to raise money for food, blankets and for the child to receive medical attention. However, the baby died before he could be taken to the nearest clinic.

The police roped in the Department of Social Development, who assisted with the funeral arrangements. The community also took part by raising money and all the necessities, including a tent, undertaker and a coffin, were provided for.
