Illegal dumping upsets residents

"We have seen that because one or two people dump here, others follow suite and the dumpsite steadily grows bigger. "

Residents in Pet Street recently confronted the driver of a bakkie who was about to dump a load of garden refuse in an open field.

According to the driver he was employed by a local garden service.

The residents contacted the Highvelder saying they wished to highlight the problem of illegal dumping that regularly occurred in the area.

A large illegal dumpsite, hidden behind a clump of trees was pointed out. Household and garden refuse as well as industrial waste littered the area.

“The irony is that the municipal dumpsite can be seen from here but people are too lazy to drive there to dump their rubbish. We have seen that because one or two people dump here, others follow suite and the dumpsite steadily grows bigger, ” said a resident who in the paste had cleared rubbish from the site at his own cost.

The residents expressed their dissatisfaction that although illegal dumping constitutes a transgression of certain municipal by-laws, no effort seems to be made by the municipality to take action against the culprits.

A meeting is to be held by residents in order to find a solution to curb the illegal dumping.
