Businessman not guilty of murder

Judgement was delivered in conclusion to an incident that occurred in 2008 in which a man was beaten to death at the house of Alton Mpheti.

An Ermelo businessman, Alton Mpheti, and a co-accused, Violet Malinga Mphethi, were found not guilty of murder but were found guilty of defeating the ends of justice in the High Court at Ermelo on Tuesday, 7 June.

Alton Mpheti was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment and Violet Mpheti was sentenced to a fine of R30 000.

A younger brother, Lazarus Mphethi, was also found not guilty of murder.

He was however found guilty of assault to cause grievous bodily harm and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

Two other accused, Solomon Matsimela and Ntwampe Thankwe, were previously acquitted on all the charges.
