Municipal facilities get a much-needed upgrade

These projects will provide more than 23 employment opportunities to locals

Msukaligwa Local Municipality is on a drive to build new and upgrade old sports facilities in all its administration units, Breyten, Chrissiesmeer, Davel and Lothair in the 2015/16 financial year.

On 20 November last year, Mafahleni Engineers were awarded the tender to draw up all the specifications for combo courts projects and IBUTHO Projects was appointed to implement the projects.

The projects include the building of new basketball, netball and volleyball courts, earthworks, spraying of weed killers, construction of storm water systems around the courts, as well as the marking and construction of fencing around the courts.

In Lothair’s Silindile sports ground, the contractor is fixing and patching the existing surfaces and 95 per cent of work has already been completed.

In Davel, Kwadela only 40 per cent of site establishment is done, while in Chrissies-meer construction of the courts has already begun and the contractor reported 50 per cent performance so far.

In KwaZanele, Breyten the contractor has only completed 40 per cent of the site establishment.
These projects will provide more than 23 employment opportunities to locals and the projects are scheduled forcompletion at the end of July.

This comes after the Minister of Sports during the 2014 National Sports Indaba urged that at least 15 per cent of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) be transferred to the provision of sports amenities.

The Municipality receives a grant allocation from the MIG through the annual Division of Revenue Act, but priority is given to the provision of basic services such as water, electricity, refuse removal and sanitation.
