Fuel spill stretches for kilometres

It is estimated that about 1 600 litres of diesel with an approximate value of at least R16 800 was lost.

A diesel spillage stretching for about 4 km was caused when pipes connecting the two diesel tanks of a heavy vehicle became dislodged in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

The spillage left a line of diesel from the N2 outside town and along Voortrekker and Kerk Streets to De Clercq Street where the largest spillage occurred.

Although some of the diesel flowed into a storm water drain leading to the Pet Dam, it is believed very little, if any, landed up in the dam.

One traffic lane of De Clercq Street between Kerk and Jan van Riebeeck Streets was closed to traffic, while teams from Msukaligwa Disaster Management and a contractor conducted mopping up and prevention measures on the scene throughout the day.

It is estimated that about 1 600 litres of diesel with an approximate value of R16 800 was lost.
