Another R38m heroin seized

The arrest comes only three days after a Mozambican national was arrested outside Chrissiesmeer on Sunday after R52m worth of heroin was found concealed in the vehicle he was travelling in.

Police Organised Crime units in Middelburg and Secunda, SANEB units together with Crime Intelligence Ermelo chalked up another success against drug smugglers when a suspect was arrested after being found in possession of 38kg of heroin on Wednesday night. The street value of the drug is estimated to be worth R38 million.

The arrest comes only three days after a Mozambican national was arrested outside Chrissiesmeer on Sunday after R52 m worth of heroin was found concealed in the vehicle he was travelling in.

On 20 April 54 kg of heroin was seized by police at the Lebombo border post.

This brings the total amount of heroin netted by police over the past fortnight to 144 kg, worth a staggering R144 million on the streets.

In the latest case an alert was put out for a suspect who had earlier passed through the Oshoek border post in a Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie.

The suspect was tailed to the Alzu Petro Port on the N4 highway where he was apprehended.

The vehicle was taken to Middelburg where it was searched. Several bags of heroin were found hidden in the vehicle.

The suspect, Donovan Elliot (33) was arrested and appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

He was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 13 May for a formal bail application.
