More money needed to resolve ongoing sewage problems

"The municipality has since started the process of sourcing money from the provincial and national government,"

Msukaligwa Municipality has responded to an article on sewer spillages in Ermelo carried in the Highvelder of 4 March.

In an e-mail from the municipal spokesman, Mr Mandla Zwane, he said the municipality appointed Rand Water to deal with the sewer challenge in Ext 32, 33 and 34.

Rand Water subsequently appointed a service provider and the scope of works included assessment of the sewer pumps in Ermelo and Ext 32, 33 and 34, the replacement of pumps at the sewer station, the refurbishment or replacement of bulk sewer pipes, the refurbishment of electrical equipment and electrical control panel, the supply and instalment of communication cables and cleaning of sewer blockages.

Mr Zwane said, according to the Technical Department, much of the assessment has been done.
Among others, four pumps and motors for pump stations in the affected areas are required.

He added that studies undertaken indicate that the budget allocated to tackle this problem is far too inadequate.

“The municipality has since started the process of sourcing money from the provincial and national government,” said Mr Zwane.
