IFP women visit Lily Mine

"Mining companies should adhere to the regulatory standards and procedures"

The IFP Women’s Brigade national leadership visited Lily Mine in Barberton to offer support to families of the three workers trapped under ground.

Prety Nkambule, Solomon Nyerende and Yvonne Mnisi were working in a container when parts of the mine near Barberton fell into a sinkhole thirteen days ago.

IFP’s national chairperson Ms Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa said they are in solidarity with the workers, especially the women who are forced to work in hazardous environment to fend for their families. She also urged mining firms in the country to put in place good and proper safety systems that would ensure the protection and safety of workers.

“Mining companies should adhere to the regulatory standards and procedures and should also put in place equipment that would detect any would be catastrophic conditions like ground instability to guarantee workers safety,”said Madlopha-Mthethwa.
